A Message from Governor O'Malley on the Tragedy in Haiti
A Message from Governor O'Malley
Dear Friends,
As people across the nation and around the world come together during this tragic time to help our neighbors in Haiti after Tuesday’s devastating earthquake, we've heard from many Marylanders who want to help and here's the best way to do it.
Relief agencies across the State are sending aid to Haiti. We have asked the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to coordinate the preparation of any state or local assets that may be requested. MEMA is reaching out to other state agencies, local emergency managers and volunteer agencies around Maryland to discuss what assets might be available if requested by the State Department. There have also been meetings with the Maryland National Guard to discuss transportation of people, supplies and equipment to Haiti, if requested.
Even though times are tough for our hardworking families, we’re encouraging all Marylanders to spare what they can by donating to our neighbors in need. Those wishing to donate clothing and other materials are asked not to do so unless a disaster response agency specifically requests such items. Marylanders who wish to help should not deploy to any disaster area unless they belong to a disaster relief organization or an approved response agency and have been requested by the State Department, MEMA or a local emergency management office.
Tragedies like this remind us of the connections we share as humans. Our thoughts and prayers are with those in Haiti during this time of tragedy .
